Ensuring your privacy is protected

On 21 December 2001, new privacy laws covering the collection and handling of personal and sensitive information took effect. The laws ensure that organisations clearly outline what type of information they hold, the reasons this information is held, the way in which it is used and in what circumstances it is disclosed.

HEM and its subsidiaries respect your right to privacy and value the trust you place in us to handle your personal and sensitive information.

This message explains how HEM is committed to handling your personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) which incorporates the amendments made to it by the Privacy Sector Act 2000 (Cth).

What personal information does HEM need to collect?

We only collect information that is needed to assist us in providing a service to you. Generally we keep a record of:

  • Information that identifies you, such as your name, address, employer details and information concerning your employment arrangements.
  • Sensitive information concerning your claim including the details and circumstances of your injury.
  • Information from other service providers such as medical practitioners, rehabilitation providers, investigators, legal practitioners, WorkCover and other experts or consultants collected for the purposes of assessing and managing your claim.
  • Banking and taxation details.

Information is collected directly from you. Where information from third parties such as the service providers mentioned above needs to be obtained, it is done following your consent.

In addition to the provisions of the Privacy Act, HEM is bound by the relevant Workers Compensation Regulations and official guidelines in the collection, use and disclosure of information relating to workers compensation claims.

How does HEM use this information?

Information collected is used for the purpose of assessing and managing your workers compensation claim, including determining liability.

Disclosure of your personal information to third parties

Following your consent information can be disclosed by HEM to the appointed service providers where this information assists with processing of the claim. You can also request we disclose information to another person acting on your behalf.

These third parties are also bound by confidentiality and non-disclosure principles and are prohibited from using your information for any other purpose. We also ensure that they are aware of our obligations and agree to be bound by these obligations.

HEM aims to maintain personal information that is accurate, current and complete.
